New Zealand is one of the most isolated countries on earth. In viticulture terms the wines span almost the whole length of the country from as far north as Auckland to the remote Lord of the Rings region on Central Otago.
Such different locations give rise to a plethora of different growing conditions that are able to host a large number of grape varieties. Sauvignon Blanc is by far the most important. It is grown in almost every area and Marlborough is perceived as the benchmark.
Recently growers have enthusiastically welcomed Pinot Noir and the variety has begun to reward them with some world-class wines. New Zealand is also producing a few outstanding Chardonnays as well as classy Rieslings, Pinot Gris and Cabernet based wines. The industry is working hard to maintain its high standards and to develop a sense of regional variation. The future looks very good providing the weather co-operates.
