Argentina

Argentina is the fifth-largest wine producing country in the world and winemaking dates back to the 16th Century. Extraordinarily favourable growing conditions, combined with European influence as well as substantial recent investment are the key factors that make Argentina a serious producer of quality wine.

The most important grape variety in the country is Malbec with approximately 45,000 acres planted throughout Argentina. Other distinctive grape varieties are Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Syrah. Apart from the typical Torrontes, Viognier grows extremely well and was first planted by Bodegas Lagarde.

Today many more varieties are being planted to add diversity to the Argentinean wine scene and wineries are becoming increasingly more serious about exports.
