Portugal

The Portuguese are capable of producing world-class wines and indeed they do. Most of these super-premiums are consumed in the home market and prices are extremely high. Lack of exposure combined with no explicit overall strategy make Portuguese wines difficult to sell in the UK, hence our limited selection.

There is a strong belief held by quality conscious growers that Portugal is competitive on the price/quality scale. What is required is investment in promotional activities and commitment by producers to work together and build an image for its still wines as it has done fr its fortified wine.

Our selection includes a classic Portuguese wine made by one of the finest producers as well as a modern style red wine produced in the Douro Valley that represents outstanding value. As sales of Portuguese wines in the UK gathers pace our list will develop.
